Objective

Interdisciplinary Design Collaborative LLC (IDC) was founded in 2008 with a vision to bring together talented individuals from different disciplines to collaborate on a variety of innovative projects. The organization strategically engaged over 100 students from Missouri S&T, fostering an ecosystem where resource sharing and teamwork were central to project development. Through structured contracts and support mechanisms, IDC aimed to provide an environment where ideas could be transformed into viable businesses.

Outcome

Interdisciplinary Design Collaborative LLC stood as a testament to the power of collaborative innovation. By bringing together diverse talent and fostering a resource-sharing culture, IDC built a portfolio of projects that span multiple industries.

Challenges and Opportunities

IDC undertook numerous projects spanning physical hardware, PCB design, contract projects, and software development. The diversity of these initiatives underscores the organization’s commitment to fostering innovation and leveraging the strengths of its members. However, the broad range of projects also presented a marketing challenge, making it difficult to position IDC effectively with potential partners and clients. The lack of a clear branding strategy hindered traction.

The foundation of IDC’s operations was based on collaboration and adaptability. Project selection and resource allocation were determined based on potential impact, with some ventures succeeding while others did not. The organization maintained a flexible and iterative approach, continuously refining its strategy to align with emerging technological trends.

Key operational strategies included:

  • Talent Utilization: Engaged students and professionals from various disciplines to foster a dynamic and knowledge-rich environment.
  • Project Management: Evaluated projects based on feasibility and impact, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Innovation Focus: Encouraged new ideas and providing the necessary support to transition concepts into functional prototypes or businesses.
  • Continuous Improvement: Held regular meetings to review project progress and provide mutual support.
